How to Prepare for Your US Immigration Interview?

When you know you will be speaking with any immigration authority, it is important to know what to expect and how to get ready. Preparing for your immigration interview, hearing or application review with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) or Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or any legal agency should include:

  • Gathering relevant documentation: Will you need your birth certificate, passport, document showing when you entered the U.S., work records, rental records or school records? You may need a marriage certificate, a divorce decree and/or bank records. Translation to English may be necessary.
  • Understanding the laws related to your situation: Do you meet the criteria for the immigration status or service that you seek? Immigration laws tell about your rights, but you must prove that you qualify for the visa, green card, waiver or other benefit that you are applying for.
  • Verifying your good character: If you are a DACA (deferred action for childhood arrivals) recipient, each time you apply, you may need to show that you have no criminal record or prove your school attendance. An interview is not usually necessary, but you may be asked to provide additional information. It is important to be ready to comply quickly and fully with any request to prove your qualifications. Or if you are a legal permanent resident (LPR) preparing for a naturalization (citizenship) interview, you will need evidence to demonstrate good moral character.
  • Having an idea about likely procedures and questions officers may ask: An attorney who has represented many other immigrants can help you anticipate questions and prepare good answers.

Before you talk to any border patrol officer, asylum officer, ICE official or any person with authority over your case, you must know your rights and how to prevent a wrong result. Consult with a lawyer at U.S. Law Center in Corona, California, to learn how we can help you prepare for your:
